Today the house is a memorial museum dedicated to the life, work and public career of the writer.

The house was built in 1861 by Aleko's father, Ivanitsa Hadzhikonstantinov, and is among the notable town houses of 19th-century Svishtov. In 1926 the building was turned into a museum, and since 1979 it has had the status of a memorial museum. It is also listed as No. 12 among the 100 National Tourist Sites.

The birthplace of Aleko Konstantinov

The house was built as a spacious two-storey home with a large courtyard and an impressive view of the Danube. Its architecture reflects the way of life of a well-off merchant family in Svishtov in the second half of the 19th century.

An interesting fact is that the building is connected not only with Aleko Konstantinov but also with several important moments in Bulgarian history. During the Russo-Turkish War, Emperor Alexander II stayed in the house during his visit to Svishtov. After the Liberation, the building housed the office of the Svishtov governorate.

It was also here that the young Aleko Konstantinov worked as a clerk alongside Ivan Vazov.

The house becomes a museum

The idea of turning Aleko's birthplace into a museum appeared as early as 1911 The initiative was taken up by the Svishtov Society of Secondary-School Teachers, but its realisation was delayed by the wars.

After the initiative was revived in 1919, organised work on creating the museum began. On 15 May 1926 the Aleko Konstantinov House Museum officially opened its doors.

In this way the writer's birthplace became one of the earliest places in Bulgaria devoted to the life and work of a significant Bulgarian author.

The atmosphere of a wealthy Svishtov home

One of the museum's strengths is that visitors do not merely look at display cases but step into an authentic historical setting.

The interior recreates the setting of a wealthy merchant house of the second half of the 19th century. Original Viennese-style furniture, everyday objects and other details showing the family's way of life have been preserved and are on display.

This makes the visit especially interesting for people who want to feel the atmosphere of Svishtov in the time when Aleko Konstantinov lived.

The life and work of the "Lucky One"

The exhibition tells Aleko's story not only as a writer but also as a man with an active public stance.

Through photographs, books, letters, documents and personal belongings various moments of his life, his creative work and his public views are presented. Visitors can learn more about his literary legacy as well as his travels and interests.

Aleko Konstantinov remains in Bulgarian culture through works such as "Bai Ganyo" and "To Chicago and Back", but the museum shows much more than the familiar literary characters.

The heart of Aleko Konstantinov

One of the most powerful exhibits in the Aleko Konstantinov House Museum is the writer's heart, which is kept in the museum.

Aleko Konstantinov was killed by mistake on 11 May 1897, and his heart was preserved and today forms part of the memorial exhibition in his birthplace.

This detail makes the museum a very personal place – visitors do not just get to know Aleko's literary legacy but come closer to the story of the man behind the works.

Svishtov and the town's cultural heritage

The Aleko Konstantinov House Museum is only one of the historical sites that can be visited in Svishtov. The town's historical museum takes care of seven themed exhibitions, covering the period from Antiquity to the 20th century.

Of particular interest is the Roman legionary camp and early Byzantine city of Novae, about 3 km from Svishtov. A visit to the town can thus combine literary history, Roman heritage and the history of the Bulgarian Revival.
