The medieval rock monastery is carved into a high limestone cliff and is among the best-known rock monasteries on the Bulgarian Black Sea coast.
The monastery lies in the central part of Golden Sands Nature Park, about 14 km north of Varna and close to the resort of the same name. The site combines natural beauty with the history of a monastic community inhabited by hermit monks in the 13th–14th centuries.
With Transfer from Sofia Airport to Aladzha Monastery you can travel directly to Varna and begin exploring one of the most interesting historical sights on the Northern Black Sea coast.
Aladzha Monastery – a rock church with centuries of history
Aladzha Monastery is carved on two levels into a limestone cliff almost 40 metres high. The first level contains the main rooms of the monastic community: the church, the monks' cells, the refectory, the kitchen, the crypt and other service rooms.
The second level has a natural rock niche, in whose eastern part the monastery chapel was formed. It is there that the remains of medieval murals survive, bearing witness to active spiritual life during the Second Bulgarian Empire.
There is no reliable information about exactly when the monastery was founded, but archaeological and historical evidence shows its importance in the 13th–14th centuries. After Bulgaria fell under Ottoman rule the monastery gradually declined and was probably finally abandoned in the late 15th or early 16th century.
Where does the name "Aladzha" come from?
The monastery's name also carries a mystery. The monastic community's Christian name is not known, and the name "Aladzha" is of Persian-Arabic origin and is associated with the meaning "colourful" or "multicoloured".
There is also an old tradition, recorded by the archaeologist Karel Škorpil, according to which the monastery's patron was St Saviour, associated with Christ the Saviour.
The unusual appearance of the rock complex, the remains of murals and the many local legends create a distinctive atmosphere around Aladzha Monastery. Tales of hidden treasure and of monks who, according to tradition, still roam around the rocks add to the place's mystical image.
The Catacombs – another mystery near the monastery
About 600–700 metres west of Aladzha Monastery lies a group of caves known as "the Catacombs".
Archaeological finds from the area include pottery, coins, graffiti and other objects that testify to habitation as early as the early Christian era, the 5th–6th centuries. This makes the area interesting not only for the medieval monastery but also for the earlier traces of Christian life on the Black Sea coast.
A visit to the Catacombs adds to the picture of the area's historical importance and shows that the rocks around Aladzha Monastery were used long before the medieval monastic community.
The museum at Aladzha Monastery
A museum building was constructed near the rock monastery in the 1970s. It houses a permanent exhibition devoted to the history of the monastic community and Christian culture in the region.
Temporary exhibitions are also held at the museum, and visitors can find popular-science publications, information materials and souvenirs. This way the visit is not limited to the rock rooms themselves but offers a more detailed look at the history of Aladzha Monastery.
Aladzha Monastery and Golden Sands Nature Park
One of the great features of the site is its location. Aladzha Monastery lies amid the nature of Golden Sands Nature Park, a protected area with diverse vegetation and rare tree species.
The combination of the rock monastery and the green spaces around it makes the place suitable not only for cultural and pilgrimage tourism but also for walks in nature.
That is also why a visit to Aladzha Monastery is easy to combine with a holiday in Golden Sands, a stroll by the sea or a tourist route around Varna.
