Instead of combining buses and local transport, you can travel in comfort to Trigrad and include several of the area's most interesting attractions in your itinerary.
Trigrad Gorge lies in the Western Rhodopes, near the village of Trigrad. The imposing gorge is formed by sheer rock walls that in places reach about 250 metres in height. The gorge is about 7 km long in total, and its most impressive part is roughly 2–3 km.
Trigrad Gorge – one of the most impressive places in the Rhodopes
Travelling through Trigrad Gorge is an experience in itself. The road runs between tall limestone cliffs, while the Trigradska river follows the bottom of the gorge.
In places the rock masses rise almost vertically above the road, giving the feeling of entering a natural stone corridor. It is the combination of the narrow road, the river, the forests and the huge rocks that makes the area one of the most recognisable natural scenes in the Rhodopes.
The area is protected and is interesting not only for its geological formations but also for its rich biodiversity. Rare bird species can be found in the gorge's cliffs, while the surrounding forests and mountain slopes offer excellent opportunities for walking and hiking.
The Devil's Throat – the legend of Orpheus
One of the greatest sights in the area is the Devil's Throat cave, right next to Trigrad Gorge.
In the cave the waters of the Trigrad river plunge from a height of about 42 metres, forming the highest underground waterfall on the Balkan Peninsula according to the Ministry of Tourism. The deafening roar of the water gives its name to the vast underground "Thundering Hall".
The cave is also linked to one of the most popular legends in the Rhodopes. According to tradition, it was through the Devil's Throat that Orpheus descended into the underworld of Hadesto search for his beloved Eurydice.
A curious feature is that objects dropped into the cave's waters do not reappear at the exit. This has been tested in various experiments and adds to the mystical atmosphere of the place.
Trigrad and the nature around the gorge
The village of Trigrad is one of the well-known high-mountain villages in the Rhodopes and a natural starting point for exploring the area.
Besides Trigrad Gorge and the Devil's Throat, there are many routes, rock formations and mountain trails around the village. The area suits short walks as well as longer hikes.
For adventure lovers, Haramiyska Caveis also of interest, located in the cliffs above the road to Trigrad. A visit there is more extreme and is done with guides and the necessary equipment.
