Instead of combining buses and local transport, you can travel in comfort from the airport to the area around the village of Yagodina.
Yagodina Cave lies in the picturesque Buynovo Gorge, about 3 km south-west of the village of Yagodina and roughly 20 km south of Devin. It is one of the best-known caves in Bulgaria and the longest in the Rhodopes. The cave's official website gives a total length of about 10.5 km, spread over several levels.
Yagodina Cave – the underground world of the Rhodopes
Yagodina Cave is a multi-level labyrinth system formed over hundreds of thousands of years. Only part of its total length has been developed for standard tourist visits.
The tourist route passes through the third, lowest level of the cave and is about 1250 metreslong. Lighting and a path have been installed, allowing visitors to see the impressive underground galleries.
The cave impresses with its variety of natural formations: stalactites, stalagmites, cave pearls and other forms created extremely slowly by water and minerals.
A constant temperature of around 6°C
One of the distinctive features of Yagodina Cave is its constant microclimate. In the developed part the temperature is around +6°C all year round, with humidity of roughly 85–91%.
So even if you visit during the hot summer months, it is wise to bring a warm layer. The contrast between the warm mountain day and the cool underground world is part of the experience.
Traces of life thousands of years ago
Yagodina Cave is interesting not only for its natural formations. Archaeological remains of a Chalcolithic dwellingdating from the 4th millennium BC have been found near the natural entrance.
According to the tourist society that manages the cave, a local pottery centre has been found there, preserved in its natural state. The finds are among the reasons the cave interests archaeologists as well as speleologists.
Buynovo Gorge – the road to the cave
The journey to Yagodina Cave is part of the experience. The cave lies on the right slope of the Buynovska river, which has carved the impressive Buynovo Gorge.
The tall limestone cliffs, narrow mountain road and dense forests make the route one of the most scenic in the Rhodopes. That is why a visit to the cave is often combined with exploring the gorge itself and the panoramic spots in the area.
